The backup 'works' — over a connection whose identity nobody checked, which is exactly the attack a certificate exists to stop. Worse, the skip-verification setting has a way of outliving the emergency: the weekend renewal fixes the certificate, and the client keeps not checking it.

The lesson: Never teach a client to skip verification. The workaround outlives the emergency.
