Good morning — it's Tuesday, October 27, 2026. ServeTheHome tested a 32GB AI card going for about $1,700 — cheap enough to change what fits on a home rig. From the bench: Nanbeige4.3-33B, a new 33B coding model that out-scores the local leader in its own harness. Plus a 16TB drive at $25 a terabyte, a Docker dashboard with a licence catch, and the PHP patch your apps need. Don't keep us a secret: forward this email to a fellow home labber, or share the web version.

ServeTheHome's review of ASRock's Creator Radeon AI Pro R9700 landed Monday: 32GB of GDDR6 at 640 GB/s, RDNA 4 silicon with 64 compute units, PCIe Gen5 x16, and a 300W dual-slot blower. ECC memory carries fine print — Linux only, software-based, enabled by hand.
The card launched at $1,300 and goes for about $1,700 today; ServeTheHome calls it a relative steal for 32GB of inference memory against NVIDIA's 32GB cards at more than twice the price. At FP6 weights, a 30B model fits with room to spare — the class of model on today's bench runs on one of these.
The honest trade: an RTX 5090 runs 3–4x faster in ServeTheHome's LLM tests (independent). You are buying gigabytes per dollar, not tokens per second — and for a rack serving a big model all day, that trade pencils out.
Nanbeige4.3-33B appeared on Hugging Face on October 24: a dense 33B on the Llama architecture, built as a teacher — the plan is to distill it into a future 3B. The big model is the factory; the small one is what ships. Its stated job is complex coding and agent work.
Against Qwen3.8-27B, the local leader (higher is better throughout). Nanbeige wins two of three on its own scoreboard:
Terminal-Bench 2.1 (agents): Nanbeige 80.9, Qwen 73.0 → Nanbeige by 7.9
SWE-Bench Pro (coding): Nanbeige 60.3, Qwen 61.7 → Qwen by 1.4
DeepSWE: Nanbeige 65.5, Qwen 42.5 → Nanbeige by 23
All scores are Nanbeige's published runs (vendor); Qwen's card confirms its 73.0 and 61.7. Not independently replicated yet.
Setup notes: Light setup. Release-day GGUF builds cover llama.cpp, and vLLM and SGLang recipes are on the card. One warning from the GGUF card: this model is unusually sensitive to quantization — plain 4-bit builds kept only 89.9% top-1 agreement with the full-precision model, so don't reach for the plain 4-bit build. Agent work wants preserve_thinking on and the XML tool-call format.
16TB for $399.99 — cheaper than the bare drive. Seagate's Expansion Desktop 16TB external is $399.99 at Newegg, down from the $549.99 shown on the same page — $25 a terabyte, and less than every bare internal 16TB on that page. Checked October 26, 2026.
Patch your PHP apps tonight — Unraid and Nextcloud first. Two flaws in PHP itself (CVE-2026-109618, CVE-2026-109619, CVSS 9.2) allow unauthenticated remote code execution. CISA added both to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities list on October 26. Unraid 7.3.4 ships the fixed PHP 8.4.27, and Nextcloud All-in-One v14.4.1 ships updated PHP with a blunt instruction: upgrade now. Pull and recreate containers — a restart alone fetches nothing new.
Dockhand manages your Docker fleet — read the licence first. Dockhand 1.0.55 (October 23) runs containers, Compose stacks, GitOps sync and vulnerability scans from one container on port 3000. The catch: Business Source License 1.1 — free for personal use, but not open source. Know it before it holds your stacks.
Homelable draws the lab you actually have. Homelable scans your network, watches live status, and has a rack builder with port-to-port patching plus Proxmox imports and per-device docs. MIT-licensed, Docker or Proxmox LXC, new this year.
Tuesday, 6:40 AM. A critical unauthenticated RCE is announced in the PHP your file-sharing app runs on, and your instance is reachable from the internet through your reverse proxy. The fixed release shipped yesterday, and the app holds your household's documents.
Your call:
A. Restart the container — a restart picks up the patched image
B. Pull the fixed release, recreate the container, restart the PHP workers, and confirm the new version before reopening access
C. Take the app offline and patch it during Saturday maintenance
